Preventative Care
Vaccination
Annual vaccinations are available for rabbits and ferrets. Rabies vaccination is available for all target species.
Parasite Treatment
There is a wide range of anti-parasitic medication on the market and I am happy to advice you. The choice of medication will depend on risk factors (indoor vs outdoor keeping), age of the animal and parasite burden.
Micro-chipping
Micro-chipping may be required prior to traveling. With a few exceptions, almost all animals can be micro-chipped.
Husbandry & Nutritional Consultation
Most illnesses in exotic pets are caused by incorrect husbandry and/or an incorrect diet. Therefore it’s important to discuss husbandry and diet during the consultation. I advice all owners to make pictures of the animals housing (e.g.terrarium, cage etc.), including the lightning used for reptiles; and the food and supplements. Proper husbandry and adequate nutrition can prevent serious disease and leads to a healthier and longer life of your pet.
Sexing
Knowing if your exotic pet is male or female is very important. Not only to pick a name, but also to prevent future illness, fighting or unwanted babies.
On a daily basis I see newly bought exotic pets being sold by pet shops, which are sexed wrongly. It’s advisable to visit an exotic veterinarian in soon after you bought the animal, so sex can be determined correctly.
Many parrot species don’t have sexual dimorphism and sexing is done by sending several freshly plucked feathers fro DNA analysis.
Beak & Nail trim
Most birds don’t need their beak to be trimmed, however some birds are either born with or aquired a scissor beak and will need regular trims with rotating file.
Chelonians also have a beak and sometimes they need to be trimmed.
Keeping your pet nails at the right length is important. If your animal is not kept on a natural substrate it most probably needs its nails trimmed regularly. It’s easiets if you get your animal used to this procedure at home. If you need any guiedance or you wish me to cut your animals nails, please make an appointment.
Grooming
Some rabbit breeds need regular grooming by the owner. However sometimes the rabbits are not used to the grooming and don’t allow the owner to do so. In these cases a groomer or a rabbit vet can groom the animal.
In most cases I do a ‘partial groom’, meaning that I’ll trim matted fur, often on the belly or around the rear end of the rabbit. Specially older rabbits may have problems to groom themselves properly and need some help.
